THE SECRET’S OUT ABOUT THE THEKLA  

The Bristol club and live music venue The Thekla is fast gaining a reputation as one of the best places in which to see some of the world’s most well known acts, after both Crowded House  and James Blunt chose the club for exclusive gigs. 

The venue, a 450-tonne ship moored in Bristol’s Mud Dock and owned by Midlands-based bar and club operator DHP, is already known for showcasing up and coming talent but this year’s shows have positioned it as a leading live venue for more than just relatively unknown acts.  

At the beginning of the year, legendary Australian rock band Crowded House launched its new line up and kicked off a twelve month world tour with an exclusive gig at the club. The first time the group had played live for more than ten years, the 300 tickets available sold out to fan club members in seconds, making them some of the most sought after tickets in the country.  

Following this, in September James Blunt played a secret gig at the floating venue, which saw listeners from GWR radio station compete fiercely for the opportunity to see the singer-songwriter perform in such an intimate setting.

This is what makes it appeal to such a range of acts – there aren’t many places that would have both huge international bands and relatively unknown local talent playing in the same venue in the same week!”
