is a club in Nottingham that focuses on live rock music gigs. It has a capacity of 2,000, and is known for its intimate atmosphere.
Bands of various sizes, on their way up and down, have played the venue in its history including Def Leppard, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Cure, U2, Paul Weller, REM, Blur, Madness, David Bowie, Oasis, Robbie Williams, Nirvana, The Stone Roses, Motorhead and pretty much every other band in between. More recently The Killers, Arctic Monkeys and Linkin Park have performed there. The venue hosts gigs featuring smaller underground bands which are enjoying chart success but are still too small to play much larger venues. Rock City's smallest room holds 300 and its largest room holds 1,700.
Rock City opened in 1980, and first band to play there was The Undertones, who returned 25 years later to play at the venue’s birthday celebrations. More recently James Blunt played a sold out show at Rock City in October 2005 before going on to play to a record attendance at the Nottingham Arena.
Currently speciality nights at Rock City include Tuned, Love Shack and Distortion with music ranging from rock and Indie to nostalgic 90’s pop and chart. The venue also hosts a night an Alternative under 18’s. Rock City offers young bands the chance to send in demo tapes with the prize a spot on the stage.
Rock City has been awarded the KERRANG! Venue of the Year award for 10 consecutive years, the MTV Headbanger’s Ball award and the BBC’s Radio 1 Lock Up Best Venue award as well as being nominated for two NME Brat Awards. The venue has also hosted hugely successful events for the BBC, MTV and the city’s two Universities.
Originally, the site was home to the Heart of the Midlands nightclub; where, in 1978, it hosted the World Professional Darts Championship.
